The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) is offering in-person paid internships to talented students interested in a career in homeland security, emergency preparedness or cybersecurity.

CLOSING DATE: March 12, 2026 (4:00PM)

TITLE: Intern-Temporary Employment Services (TES)

LOCATION: Hamilton, West Trenton or Newark, NJ

SALARY: $20.00/Hour

INTERNSHIP:

  • June 8, 2026-July 31, 2026 (8 weeks) – All Divisions except NJCCIC
  • June 8, 2026-August 28, 2026 (12 weeks) – NJCCIC Division

The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) leads and coordinates New Jersey’s counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and preparedness efforts while building resiliency throughout the State.

Interns will:

  • Be exposed to all facets of the State homeland security and preparedness mission.
  • Interact with senior government officials and various government agencies.
  • Receive training and career development opportunities.
  • Have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and college credit.
  • Conclude their internship with a capstone presentation.

Internships are offered in the following areas:

  • Intelligence & Operations Division (Hamilton) (8 Week Program)
  • Preparedness Division (Hamilton) (8 Week Program)
  • Administration Division (Hamilton) (8 Week Program)
  • NJ Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC)  (Hamilton, West Trenton or Newark) ( 12 Week Program)

Applicants will be able to select one Division of their interest. Interns must report to in-person to their assigned office location. Interns are hired as TES employees and are not eligible for remote work. Hours of work will be Monday-Friday within business hours of 8AM-5PM. Interns are limited to no more than 35 hours per week. The internship program starts and ends on the dates noted above.

The internship for the Administration, Preparedness, and Intelligence & Operations Divisions is a consecutive eight (8) week program for five days a week (Monday-Friday). The internship in the NJCCIC Division is a consecutive twelve (12) week program for five days a week (Monday-Friday).

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

High School Seniors are welcome to apply to internships in our NJ Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC). Internships in all other areas are only open to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university or post-graduate program who have completed a minimum of 48 college credits or two years by the start of the internship.

Applicable to all students:

  • Undergo a Level 1 background investigation check.
  • Have a U.S. citizenship or permanent residence status.
  • Be available for the entire duration of the internship program.
  • Submit all required documentation with application (resume, unofficial transcript, completed State of New Jersey Application for Employment (available on our website), cover letter discussing why you wish to intern for NJOHSP, and a writing sample under 500 words demonstrating your written work product (school assignment is acceptable).
  • Must be available for Orientation on June 8, 2026.

All submissions must be received no later than 4:00PM on the closing date. Failure to submit all required documentation may result in your disqualification. 

NJ RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

In accordance with the New Jersey First Act P.L. 2011 c70, effective September 1, 2011, new public employees are required to obtain New Jersey residency within one (1) year of employment. NJ ETHICS REQUIREMENT

Applicants accepting employment with NJOHSP are required to adhere to the Conflicts of Interest Law N.J.S.A. 52:13D-12 et seq., the Uniform Ethics Code N.J.A.C. 19:61-1.1. et seq., and LPS Supplementary Ethics Code which may limit or preclude outside activities and/or outside employment. Employees in certain positions are required to annually file financial disclosure statements.
