Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions. Its mission is to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through scientific research, education, and exhibition.
The Education Library & Resource Associate will work across the AMNH Education division to identify, catalog, and make accessible educational literature, curricula, and research briefs located across classrooms and workspaces. In collaboration with the AMNH Research Library, this role will support the development and implementation of a comprehensive catalog system for the Education Teaching Library.
The Associate will also support programming through satellite library displays, book clubs, and initiatives developed by the Gottesman Learning Center team.
Key Responsibilities
Database and Documentation Management

Catalogue literary materials across classrooms and workspaces, including labeling and barcoding.

Maintain the Teaching Library digital catalog and database integrity.

Centralize documentation including accessioning, deaccessioning, and reporting.

Assist in updating standard operating procedures.
Collection Use and Care

Monitor Teaching Library usage and enforce reporting/check-in protocols.

Oversee environmental and preservation concerns.

Collaborate with Facilities, Security, Legal, and Research Library staff.
Programming Support

Staff the AMNH Research Library Reference Desk during weekend open hours.

Work five days per week, including one weekend day.

Support programs launching at the Gottesman Learning Center in 2026.

Coordinate satellite library displays for teachers, parents, students, and the public.
Qualifications
Minimum
-
Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, humanities, literature, museum studies, information sciences, or related field.

3 years of professional experience with object or literature collections in an educational or library setting.

Knowledge of collections management standards and best practices.

Experience with cataloguing software and record management.

Strong organizational and project management skills.
Preferred

Master’s degree in information sciences, library sciences, or related field.
Salary
$60,000 – $70,000 annually
