Position Summary

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s leading scientific and cultural institutions. Its mission is to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through research, education, and exhibition.

The Gottesman Learning Center Exhibition Archivist will collaborate with Education division staff, the Research Library, and Museum departments to develop innovative, interpretive temporary exhibitions in the Library’s Alcove Gallery. These exhibitions will feature rare natural history literature and unique archival materials including photography, moving images, art, records, and memorabilia.

The Archivist will also support programming, outreach, and marketing efforts connected to exhibitions and contribute to audience engagement initiatives for both general visitors and specialized communities.

Responsibilities

Research and Exhibitions

  • Develop overall exhibition concepts, select materials, and write exhibit labels.

  • Conduct research in the Library and Archives to identify materials.

  • Work with Archives staff to process exhibition materials.

  • Coordinate with the Library Conservator for conservation treatment.

  • Collaborate on exhibit display design and installation.

  • Coordinate production of labels and panel materials.

  • Develop online exhibition components.

  • Guide visitors through Alcove Gallery exhibits.

  • Train weekend staff on exhibit interpretation.

Marketing and Communications
  • Collaborate with Communications and Public Programs for outreach.

  • Prepare exhibit publicity materials (catalogs, posters, websites, press releases).

  • Write blog posts related to exhibit content and collections.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Stay current on best practices in academic and museum library exhibitions.

  • Attend professional conferences and webinars.

  • Work one weekend day weekly and support evening/weekend programs as needed.

  • Perform related assignments as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library/Information Science with focus in archives or special collections.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to thrive in collaborative, cross-departmental environments.

  • Excellent organizational, research, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing innovative exhibits in science and humanities fields.

  • 5+ years professional experience in library, museum, or cultural organization settings.

  • Familiarity with OCLC WorldShare Management Services (WMS) and ArchivesSpace.

  • Experience processing archival collections.

  • Scanning experience and proficiency in Adobe Photoshop.

  • Degree in natural sciences.

Salary

$65,000 – $70,000 annually
