Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Library seeks a part-time reference librarian to work at one of our two campus locations: Journal Square Campus in Jersey City or North Hudson Campus in Union City. This is a great opportunity for a recent MLS/MLIS graduate or current student in the last semester of the MLS/MLIS program.

Job Description:

The Part-Time Reference Librarian is responsible for a full range of professional duties including providing reference services, assisting with collection development, instructing users in information literacy and technologies, creating and updating guides, and working collaboratively with a diverse range of colleagues.


  • Holds regular shifts at the reference desk, answering reference questions in-person, by phone, or via online chat.
  • Conducts one-on-one research consultations both in-person and online via WebEx/Zoom.
  • Prepares bibliographic guides to resources as assigned using LibGuides.
  • Assists with identifying resources to be added to the library collection, in collaboration with subject specialists.
  • Assists with weeding and updating of collection in areas as assigned.
  • Contributes to library instruction sessions on an as-needed basis on Fridays.
  • Monitors library operations during weekend hours to ensure quality patron service.


  • Recent graduate of a Library Science Master’s degree or equivalent ALA-accredited program, or current student near the end of the program.
  • Interest and coursework in academic librarianship, including instruction.
  • Familiarity with teleconferencing software, such as WebEx or Zoom.
  • Strong service orientation, good people skills, and commitment to public service excellence.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.


$28/hour, with expectation of working 20-24 hours/week. Work schedule and location to be determined.
