The Leonia Public Library is currently accepting applications for a Local History Archives Internship for current Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) students with a focus or interest in archives. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in a small but rich local history collection and to help make unique historical resources more accessible to the public.

About the Role:
Under the guidance of our Part-Time Librarian and Library Director, the Archives Intern will assist in organizing, cataloging, digitizing, and promoting the materials in our Local History Room. The focus will be on increasing public access to archival items via our website and PastPerfect museum software system.

Responsibilities:
Digitize and catalog photographs and documents in PastPerfect software
Upload selected materials to the library’s website for public access
Assist in processing and describing archival and historical collections

Conduct basic preservation and re-housing of items as needed

Assist in selecting and curating items for community displays and exhibits

Participate in archival appraisal and organizational tasks

Contribute to the archives’ social media presence and online visibility

Work independently and collaboratively to complete archival projects

Requirements:
Enrollment in an ALA-accredited MLIS program

Completion of at least one introductory course in archives principles and practices is preferred

Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Ability to lift and move medium-heavy boxes and navigate stairs

Willingness to take initiative and work independently

Preferred (but not required):
Experience with PastPerfect museum software

Experience with Adobe Photoshop Elements or other image-editing software

Familiarity with metadata standards and archival description practices
