Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Reference Librarian. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Rutgers University-Newark at the John Cotton Dana Library, the temporary Reference Librarian will assist students, faculty, and other users with their information needs at the Dana Library Reference Desk. This librarian will also participate in the library’s information literacy instruction program as needed. This part-time position will normally work on weekdays on-site at the Dana Library between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.; may occasionally include evening or weekend hours.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Assist students, faculty, and other users with their research and information needs in person and online.
  • Provide assistance and instruction in the use of a variety of online subscription databases, Google Scholar, library-created resources, library-managed technologies, and the Libraries’ QuickSearch discovery platform.
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of LibGuides and other reference-related projects.
  • Assist with the library’s information literacy instruction program for undergraduate students as needed.
  • Respond quickly, courteously, and accurately to patron queries.
  • Appropriately refer questions to subject librarians or other library teams.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
Library reference experience in-person and online.

Preferred Qualifications:
Two years’ experience providing reference services and library instruction in an academic library setting
Experience with Springshare applications, especially LibAnswers and LibGuides

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Well-developed communication, interpersonal, and team player skills
Experience with a variety of subscription-based library resources that include university-level databases
Demonstrated commitment to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion
Computer literacy skills and experience, and knowledge of the Microsoft software suite
