Rutgers University-New Brunswick’s School of Communication and Information (SC&I) is seeking a news writing intern to work 20 hours/week (firm) for a minimum of 12 weeks. The News Writing Intern will report to Brenda Sheridan, the Director of Marketing and Communications.
We are currently accepting applications for students who wish to intern during summer 2026 (and possibly fall 2026 as well) from currently enrolled Rutgers University students majoring in Journalism and Media Studies.
Duties for this position will include:
· Writing one to two news stories a week
· Researching, interviewing, editing, fact checking and proofreading the news stories.
· Writing social media posts for the news stories to Hootsuite (Hootsuite training provided).
· Posting social media live from SC&I events.
· Creating short videos to post with the stories and for use as stand-alone social media posts.
· Assisting with taking photos and videos of the SC&I community.
· Assisting with general day-to-day activities, including some public relations work, including logging pitches if time allows.
· The intern will learn to ethically and responsibly incorporate some AI tools into the editing process (such as Grammarly) —using them to increase accuracy and efficiency while maintaining accuracy, transparency, and independent journalistic judgment.
· Assisting with public relations-related work, including researching and tracking and logging pitches to the media, trade pubs, and other outlets.
Requirements:
· Excellent writing and research skills.
· Be organized and able to multi-task.
· Be assertive and proactive
· Manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
· Have a basic understanding of Associated Press (AP) style or willingness to learn.
The ideal candidate will be a student who takes initiative, offers creative solutions, and desires to build a strong news writing portfolio.
This internship can be used for academic credit and the hourly pay is $15.13. Applicants must confirm for-credit internship eligibility requirements before applying if using toward credits.
