Job Description: The Scotch Plains Public Library is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Part-Time Youth Services Librarian to engage and support our teen patrons (grades 6-12) while assisting with general Youth Services responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be passionate about fostering a welcoming environment for our teen patrons and empowering teen volunteers.

Hours: up to 25 hours per week, including one evening and one Saturday per month

Responsibilities:

●     Perform all ordering and deselecting for a varied collection of young adult materials, including print and digital media.

●     Develop and implement programs and activities specifically for teens, including book clubs, workshops, outreach, and special events.

●     Onboard, train, and supervise an active corps of teen volunteers, including an active teen advisory board.

●     Provide reference and readers’ advisory services to teens and younger patrons.

●     Create and maintain teen book displays and booklists.

●     Create promotional materials and utilize social media and other tools to engage and inform teens and families about library programs and services.

●     Collaborate with local schools and community organizations to promote library services and programs.

●     Create and update content for the teen pages on the library website; create and update event information on the library website calendar.

●     Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities as needed.

●     Foster a safe and inclusive space for all youth patrons.

Qualifications:

●     Master’s Degree in Library Science

●     Previous experience working with teens and children in a library, educational, or community setting is highly desirable.

●     Strong knowledge of young adult and children’s literature, as well as current trends in youth culture.

●     Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with a diverse group of young patrons.

●     Experience in customer service and collection development.

●     Proficiency with library technology and digital resources.

●     Ability to communicate clearly, work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions:

●     Must be available to work at least one evening per week and one Saturday per month.

●     Flexibility to adjust hours as needed for special events or programming.

Salary: The hourly rate is $34 per hour for individuals with an MLIS. For graduate students, the salary will be adjusted based on qualifications and experience. This is a Civil Service position and is subject to the regulations of the New Jersey First Act.
